Join the Santiago Center and Universidad Católica’s (UC) Center for Local Development (CEDEL) for an online presentation by two Columbia grad students living and researching in Villarrica, Chile.

Olivia Cull (MPH candidate, Columbia’s Mailman School of Public Health) will present “Barriers to Education and Health Access: Insights from Families and Educators of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder in Chile.” She will discuss effective mental health programs tailored to local school communities in the south of the country. Her mentor, CEDEL professor and researcher Alfredo Gaete, will provide commentary.

Next, Mikayla Cheng (MIA candidate, Columbia’s School of International and Public Affairs) will present “Exploring the Landscape of Mapuche Tourism: Trends, Challenges, and Pathways to Success.” She will discuss the evolving landscape of indigenous tourism in the Araucanía Region, drawing on interviews with Mapuche entrepreneurs in lodging, food, and crafts. Her mentor, CEDEL professor and researcher Andrés Reid, will provide commentary.

This event highlights the Santiago Center’s commitment to supporting Columbia University students in conducting impactful research. Initiatives such as the Field Research Grant are made possible through partnerships, including an agreement between the Santiago Center and UC’s network of Research Centers and Stations, of which CEDEL is a member.
