Academic Research and the Faculty Visitorship Program

Five academic conferences were hosted at Reid Hall this year, addressing disciplines from philosophy to public health, to the intersections of Black Studies and French studies.

Narrative medicine was brought to the fore by Columbia Professor Delphine Taylor and former Institute Fellow Nellie Hermann.Their conferences were hosted as part of our civic engagement initiative to create bridges between Columbia University researchers and European colleagues in this developing field. The Paris Center’s support for academic research went beyond hosting conferences to bringing twelve Columbia professors to Paris for between one and three weeks, as part of our Faculty Visitorship program co-sponsored by the Institute for Ideas and Imagination. Seven of our events this year featured faculty visitors, including chamber music concerts, discussions on sport and society, and film screenings, such as Naeem Mohaiemen’s presentation of Those Who Do Not Drown, a cinematic reflection on modes of care and the afterlife of caregivers.

Twenty of our events included Columbia faculty, in addition to the events featuring Columbia scholars in the Institute for Ideas and Imagination’s SNF Rendez-vous, where Fellows presented their projects in progress.
