Supporting Displaced and Emerging Artists

From Fall 2023 to Summer 2024, Reid Hall was pleased to welcome guests to our conference rooms, gardens, and café. In addition to receiving students, Fellows, faculty visitors, artists, and local partners, the Columbia Global Paris Center hosted a total of 77 public events, ranging from concerts celebrating Ukrainian resilience to discussions highlighting the creativity of the Black African diaspora. While we prepare next year’s calendar of public programs, we invite you to reflect with us on the past year. You’ll find a full list of articles about last year’s events at the bottom of the page.

In 2023, we launched our programming calendar with the Displaced Artists Initiative in collaboration with the Institute for Ideas and Imagination. This impactful evening featured a presentation by Iranian-Afghan author Aliyeh Ataei and a chamber music performance curated by Anna Stavychenko, highlighting the 1991 Project. Both Ataei and Stavychenko were in residence for a year and made significant contributions to the Reid Hall community, making it fitting to start our year by celebrating their work.

Throughout the year, audiences had multiple opportunities to engage with these artists. We organized an event with Aliyeh Ataei and Salar Abdoh, an Iranian author and her frequent translator, focusing on writing, translation, and borders. Additionally, we hosted a performance of Ataei's work "Danse de fumée," following its premier at the Nuit Festival.

The 1991 Project, a non-profit association led by musicologist and classical music producer Anna Stavychenko, organized 10 concerts at Reid Hall. The project's mission is to safeguard and promote Ukrainian music by helping Ukrainian musicians preserve their artistic skills in France and the Western world. Learn more about Anna’s work and the inception of the 1991 Project in her Atelier episode.

We also collaborated with ProQuartet – Centre Européen de Musique de Chambre to organize three additional concerts. They support young musicians at the start of their careers, providing performance opportunities to gain experience before entering competitions. Altogether, these concerts enriched our cultural programming while supporting displaced and emerging artists.
