Health Initiatives

Our Center is at the forefront of initiating and supporting health projects. We work in food and nutrition, maternal health, child mortality, dental health, water and sanitation, communicable and non-communicable diseases, food production and community health worker training. We participate in and have established several health programs through a collaboration between Columbia University’s Medical College, the Earth Institute, the Institute of Human Nutrition and local academic institutions, government bodies, non-governmental Institutions and the private sector.

The International Initiative for Pediatrics and Nutrition

The Center has been undertaking a nutritional study on Pediatric Oncology in collaboration with Columbia's International Initiative for Pediatrics and Nutrition (IIPAN), headquartered at the Irving Medical Centre, University of Nairobi, and Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH).

The study involves training staff members at the pediatric department, and part of the objective is to research nutrition interventions on the incidence of malnutrition at diagnosis and during treatment. In May 2021, Columbia University, through its regional partner (Columbia Global Centers | Nairobi), delivered a donation of five weighing scales and five
stadiometers to KNH.

Past

The President’s Global Innovation Fund (PGIF) was launched in March 2013 by President Emeritus Lee C. Bollinger to increase global opportunities for research, teaching, and service. The initiative supports Columbia faculty in developing projects and research collaborations within and across the University’s 11 Columbia Global Centers.

Student Resources

Columbia School of  Nursing commenced the first Global Practicum Program in Kenya and partnered with Columbia Global Centers | Nairobi (CGC | Nairobi), the School of Nursing - University of Nairobi and Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) to enable students to learn more about real-world experiences and scenarios that enable them to be better prepared to provide accurate and independent diagnoses.  CGC | Nairobi caught up with students and learned more about their experiences at KNH, why they chose to undertake their practicum in Kenya, and the lessons they would take from their practicum practice at KNH.
