Join us for an insightful talk by Joerg Schaefer, Lamont Research Professor and Director of the Cosmogenic Nuclide Group at the Columbia Climate School's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory (LDEO), adjunct professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences (DEES), and senior fellow at Columbia University’s Climate and Life Initiative, Schaefer explores how glaciers and ice sheets respond to past and present warming, the impacts of ice-related hazards (including tsunamis and glacial lake outburst floods), and the role of science in developing solutions to these pressing challenges.

In addition to these roles, Schaefer is a Research Professor in Geochemistry at LDEO, Co-Director of the Undergraduate Special Concentration and Major in Sustainable Development, Founding Director of the Lamont Cosmogenic Nuclide Group, and Co-Director of Columbia Earth Networks’ “Decarbonization, Climate Resilience, and Justice” initiative.

Currently in Chile as a Scholar in Residence at the Santiago Center and Universidad Católica’s Institute of Geography (part of the School of History, Geography, and Political Science)—where he contributes to the “Climate and Socio-Environmental Dynamics” research group—he will deliver his talk on the evolving challenges of climate and ice.
