A report released by the Health Effects Institute (HEI)  this year revealed that over 8.1 million deaths worldwide in 2021 were attributable to air pollution, with more than 90% of these deaths linked to PM2.5 pollution. Air pollution has become the second leading risk factor for death.

How have historical catastrophic air pollution events influenced the development of air quality regulation? What are the most commonly used air pollution epidemiology models, and how are they studied and applied? How can the exposure assessment prediction models be better applied in public health impact assessments?

To explore these questions, Columbia Global Center Beijing and the Beijing American Center will jointly host a lecture featuring Mike He, Adjunct Assistant Professor of Sociology at Columbia University. Professor He, as an air pollution epidemiologist, will provide a comprehensive introduction to the historical context, research methodologies, and practical applications of air pollution and public health research.

This event, part of the Beijing Global Center's Scholar-in-Residence program, will offer a valuable platform for experts and scholars to exchange insights on the latest study on air pollution and public health research. Additionally, it will serve as a platform for the public to gain a general understanding of the history and significance of air pollution, encouraging greater support and interest in air pollution regulation.

Mike He

Adjunct Assistant Professor of Sociology in the Department of Sociology

Mike He joined the QMSS faculty in 2021 and has taught the Theory and Methods and Data Analysis courses at QMSS. An air pollution epidemiologist by training, he is currently an Instructor in the Department of Environmental Medicine and Climate Science at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. His research interests include the health effects of air pollution in low- and middle-income countries, using existing satellite data for air pollution health studies, and quantifying the effects of climate change on air pollution. More recently, his work has focused on air pollution exposure modeling using machine learning-based modeling approaches and exploring the effects of air pollution on immune response and vaccine antibody levels. He has a BA in Public Health and Earth & Planetary Sciences from Johns Hopkins University, an MHS in Environmental Health Sciences from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and a PhD in Environmental Health Sciences from the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health.
