The 1991 Project presents a concert-presentation marking the 150th anniversary of the Ukrainian composer, conductor, and pedagogue Fedir Yakymenko (1876–1945).

The programme will feature performances by the musicians involved in preparing the new edition: Pavlo Lysyi (piano), Andrii Koliada (violin), and Artem Zamkov (cello). During the concert, pianist and lecturer Pavlo Lysyi will also share insights into Yakymenko’s life, artistic evolution, and the cultural dialogue between Ukraine and France that shaped his work.

This concert-presentation invites audiences to rediscover a composer whose artistic voice, once silenced by history, resonates today with renewed clarity and relevance.

Musical program to be announced.

Anthology of Ukrainian Chamber Music: Fedir Yakymenko

The evening marks the presentation of the two-volume publication Anthology of Ukrainian Chamber Music: Fedir Yakymenko, prepared as part of the Ukrainian Institute’s long-term project Anthology of Ukrainian Music. Volume I is dedicated to piano solo works; Volume II features chamber compositions for violin and cello with piano. The new edition is timed to coincide with the composer’s 150th anniversary and represents an important step toward restoring Yakymenko’s legacy to the European musical canon.

For many decades, Yakymenko’s name remained on the margins of music history, largely due to his emigration and his refusal to cooperate with Soviet authorities. Having spent a significant part of his life in France, he developed a distinctive modernist style at the intersection of symbolism, mysticism, impressionism, and cosmogonic ideas. His works from this period reveal refined harmonic language, sensitivity to timbre, and a fascination with celestial imagery and spiritual introspection.

This event will take place in Reid Hall’s Grande Salle Ginsberg-LeClerc, built in 1912 and extensively renovated in 2023 thanks to the generous support of Judith Ginsberg and Paul LeClerc.
