Democracy and Governance

The global rise of populism and its profound impact on the preservation or erosion of democratic values and institutions has emerged as one of the most urgent issues of our time. Studying liberal democracy and human rights in Türkiye, a pivotal geopolitical actor, offers critical insights into this global phenomenon. While Türkiye is shaped by its unique historical, institutional, and political traditions, as well as its economic dynamics, its shift toward a more authoritarian political culture is deeply connected to the broader trend of rising populism worldwide.

At Columbia Global Center Istanbul, key areas of inquiry include freedom of speech, journalism, the refugee crisis, human rights, peace and security, democratic processes, and gender. These topics are central to understanding the challenges facing not only Türkiye but democracies around the world. By exploring these issues, the Center contributes to a deeper global understanding of the forces shaping contemporary politics and society.
