Columbia Global Centers | Beijing invited Dr. Gita Steiner-Khamsi of Teachers College, Columbia University, to present findings from the 2021/22 UNESCO study on initiatives, networks, and platforms, and elaborate greater use of evidence-based research for policy formulation and implementation in achieving SGD4.
She was joined by two Chinese scholars to discuss the existing dilemmas and breakthroughs of evidence-based policy decisions in China's education sector.
Gita Steiner-Khamsi, Professor of International and Comparative Education at Teachers College, Columbia University. She is also the Professor at the Graduate Institute, Geneva, and Director at the Network for International Policies and Cooperation in Education and Training (NORRAG).
Her academic appointment at Columbia University, first as untenured Associate Professor, then as tenured Full Professor and Department Chair, started in 1995. She is also a board member of the Harriman Institute for Russian, Eurasian, and East European Studies of Columbia University. As a former President of the Comparative and International Education Society (CIES), she edited two book series that deal with comparative policy studies. She published eight books and numerous journal articles, book chapters, and reports on topics related to transnational policy borrowing and lending, global governance and education, global education industry, public-private partnership in education, and comparative research methodology.
Jun Teng, Professor and Deputy Dean at the Institute of International and Comparative Education, Beijing Normal University; Member of the Executive Committee of the World Comparative Education Societies, and Assistant Secretary-General of Comparative Education Society for Asia. She was also a former Adjunct Associate Professor, at Teachers College, Columbia University, and a short-term consultant to the World Bank Global Education Partnership.
Dr. Teng has long been engaged in comparative education research. Her main research areas include international organization and its education policies, 21st century core literacy, global competence, education governance, international education, and development education. Her latest books include: Preparing to work in International Organizations (Shanghai Educational Publishing House, 2018), and Reconstructing the Neo-Modern Curriculum: An Investigation on Curriculum Development in International Schools in China (Shanghai Educational Publishing House, 2019).
Ji Liu, Professor of Comparative Education and Economics of Education at Shaanxi Normal University, where he serves as the program director for the master's degree program in adult learning and leadership. He is interested in education policy research at the intersection of teachers, learners, skills, and the economy, and has published widely, including peer-reviewed scholarly articles on Oxford Review of Education, Journal of Global Health, Frontiers in Psychology, etc. He is the founding series editor of Routledge Series on Learners, Teachers, and the Economy, and author of several books including Teacher Labour Markets during an Era of Economic Boom (Routledge, 2021) and Kuo Ping Wen (Long River Press, 2016).
He was a consultant at the World Bank Group and part of the 2018 World Development Report team, and he holds an academic appointment as adjunct faculty at Teachers College of Columbia University, as well as a project appointment as a senior research associate at NORRAG, The Graduate Institute in Geneva.
