Forging New Pathways: Columbia Climate School Deepens Global Impact with Strategic Beijing Visit

Climate School leadership deepened ties in Beijing, as Dean Alexis Abramson led a delegation to convene with leading experts, promoting the Columbia Climate School’s educational offerings, research expertise, and impact-driven collaboration on climate solutions.

Hosted by Columbia Global Center Beijing, the visit featured a series of events engaging prospective students, alumni, and local experts in dialogue on “Educating for Sustainable Development”, while showcasing the Climate School’s interdisciplinary graduate programs and professional development opportunities.

The visit began on Jan. 24 with a dynamic “Climate School Beijing Preview Day”. This event focused on cultivating the next generation of climate innovators.

Dean Abramson showcased the school’s three Master's programs to an audience of prospective students. She emphasized that the curriculum equips students with practical tools to innovate, rigorously assess risk, and develop scalable solutions across meaningful sectors.

The session also featured a robust policy exchange with key Chinese counterparts. Speakers included Professor Xufeng Zhu of Tsinghua University and Dr. Jianyu Zhang of the Belt and Road Green Alliance. This dialogue reinforced the school’s position at the forefront of global policy discourse.

The delegation’s visit combined public-facing exchange with deeper expert engagement. Following the public dialogues, the focus shifted on Jan. 26 to a specialized closed-door roundtable, “Pathways to Asia’s Green Transition,” which brought together senior practitioners, scholars, and industry leaders for in-depth discussion on policy, finance, and innovation in climate action.

The roundtable explored leveraging China’s experience in integrated system-level planning to accelerate Asia’s green transition. Experts highlighted the need to move beyond fragmented project financing toward holistic investment in grids and industrial standards. 

By convening these meaningful dialogues and gatherings, Columbia Global Center Beijing continues to strengthen the university’s connections with China’s leading policy and industry voices, as well as with the next generation of climate leaders. These engagements foster mutual understanding and trust, laying the groundwork for sustained cross-border collaboration that is essential to advancing climate solutions and building a more sustainable future.
