On July 1, 2025, the Columbia Global Center in Athens, in collaboration with the Columbia Alumni of Greece, organized  a send-off reception to welcome the newest students from Greece joining Columbia University this fall. Held at the Tsakos Energy Navigation headquarters in southern Athens, the event brought together incoming students, alumni, and friends of the University, celebrating the start of their Columbia journey. 

During June, Columbia students enrolled in the Greek Epigraphy course participated in a unique academic experience through the Epigraphy Seminar Study Trip in Athens, led by Paraskevi Martzavou, Professor in the Department of Classics.  Organized in collaboration with the Columbia Global Center in Athens and supported by the Paul and Alexandra Canellopoulos Foundation, the program offered hands-on engagement with ancient inscriptions in their original archaeological settings. We're proud to announce the launch of "Avato," a new exhibition by Stavros Niarchos Foundation Public Humanities Initiative (SNFPHI) awardee Latent Community (Sotiris Tsiganos and Ionian Bisai), with the support of the Columbia Global Center in Athens.

On June 12, 2025, we hosted a conversation between Pulitzer Prize–winning author Jhumpa Lahiri and the Columbia Global Center Athens Director Stefanos Gandolfo. Drawing on her well-known books—Interpreter of Maladies, In Other Words, and Translating Myself and Others—Lahiri shared personal insights about how language shapes identity, and how writing can be a powerful way to explore and redefine who we are.

The Columbia Global Center Athens participated as a programming partner at the 10th Delphi Economic Forum, held from April 9 to 12, 2025, in Delphi, Greece. The Forum brought together leaders from the public and private sectors to engage in discussions on some of the world’s most pressing issues. 

Conference Addresses the Growing Healthcare Needs of Displaced Persons

In March 2025, 19 students from the Columbia University School of Social Work (CUSSW) traveled to Athens for an immersive learning experience, engaging with key institutions and organizations dedicated to migration and the protection of vulnerable minority groups.

In March 2025, as part of their immersive learning experience, students from the School of International and Public Affairs had the opportunity to engage directly with key stakeholders shaping migration policy and refugee support in Greece.

On March 20, the Columbia Global Center Athens in collaboration with the Harriman Institute and in partnership with IDIS and Panteion University hosted a panel discussion titled “Golden Passports: Global Market for Citizenship” exploring the complexities of the international market for citizenship and residency. 

Columbia Summer Global Core: The Athens Experience is just one of several upcoming opportunities available for students at the Athens Center.

On March 11th, the Columbia Global Center in Athens, in collaboration with the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) and Endeavor Greece, hosted a panel discussion titled "From Lab to Market: Fueling Greece’s Innovation." 

The Columbia Global Center in Athens announces a grant opportunity to support a Greek medical oncologist for a one-year clinical research position at Columbia University.

Greece and Columbia

Columbia University announced in November 2022 the launch of a new Columbia Global center in Athens, Greece. 

The impact of Greece on western civilization is unmatched, extending far beyond the Athenian democratic experiment that is considered the origin of modern-day democracies across the globe.

Many European and US American universities study Greek antiquity, but, in Columbia’s academic life, Greece has always had a special role.

The Core Curriculum that all Columbia undergraduate students are required to take–anchored in Western literary, historical, political, and art traditions—starts with Greece.
