Avato: An Exhibition on Unveiling Greece's Hidden Black History

We're proud to announce the launch of "Avato," a new exhibition by Stavros Niarchos Foundation Public Humanities Initiative (SNFPHI) awardee Latent Community (Sotiris Tsiganos and Ionian Bisai), with the support of the Columbia Global Center in Athens.

June 23, 2025

Hosted at the Mohammed Ali Museum in Kavala from June 14 to July 24, 2025, "Avato" is an exhibition about the complex history and identity of a village in Xanthi, Northern Greece, known for its long-standing black community. Latent Community's project presents reflections from community members on their history, often traced to the Ottoman slave trade. By placing this microhistory within the context of national narratives, the exhibition aims to acknowledge the extensive but often-overlooked story of black presence in Greece.

The Columbia Global Center in Athens, aimed at fostering vital scholarship and cultural exchange across Greece, proudly supports "Avato.,"  The Center’s collaboration with SNFPHI includes The Columbia Summer Global Core: Athens Experience – Columbia University’s first-ever Global Core course taught entirely in Greece. For three intensive weeks, Columbia undergraduate students from diverse departments got an on-the-ground experience learning about Greece, its history, and culture. We invite you to visit the Mohammed Ali Museum in Kavala to experience "Avato" and engage with its powerful story of history, identity, and belonging.
