Floods Management: Prevention, Protection, and Mitigation

Water-related disasters account for about 90% of natural disasters globally, exacerbated by climate change that has resulted in changes in weather patterns around the world. In India, floods have become a recurrent phenomenon, causing huge loss of lives and damage to livelihood systems, property, infrastructure and public utilities in several parts of the country. In collaboration with Columbia Global Centers | Nairobi, the University of Nairobi and the Center for Science and Environment, India, Columbia Global Centers | Mumbai is hosting a webinar on July 3, 2020 to discuss strategies for flood management.

Teaching Climate Change

Teaching Extreme Weather and Climate Change

Even as Climate Change poses severe risks to the city, systematic research and teaching about the subject lags behind in Mumbai’s colleges. To address this gap, Columbia Global Centers | Mumbai launched a seminar series for building conceptual and methodological capacity among college teachers. The inaugural session was led by Adam Sobel, Professor of Applied Physics and Applied Mathematics at Columbia on December 6, 2019. His presentation showcased the risk to coastal megacities from storms and sea-level rise.

Combating Climate Change: Regional Responses to Global Challenges

Climate change will increasingly impact every aspect of every life in every region around the world. Through an event organized by the Columbia Global Centers at Columbia University in New York on December 3, 2019, Columbia faculty shared their perspectives on the impacts of climate change in different regions around the world and how each region has been working to mitigate these effects. Perspectives on climate change and its effects on agriculture and air pollution in India were presented by Ruth DeFries, University Professor and Denning Family Professor of Sustainable Development, and V. Faye McNeill, Professor of Chemical Engineering.

Joaquim Goes

Developing Effective Strategies for Managing Marine Ecosystems in a Changing Climate

“Climate Change and its impact on marine ecosystems is bringing a series of changes; affecting national security, water security as well as food security,” noted Joaquim Goes, Lamont Research Professor of Biology and Paleoenvironment at the Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory, Columbia University, in a workshop held at Columbia Global Centers | Mumbai on February 20-21, 2019.  The workshop brought together 25 scientists to discuss strategies for managing marine ecosystems in the wake of climate change.

Ruth DeFries

The Many Sides of a Roti: Cereals and their Impact on Environment and Nutrition 

Using long-term agricultural and climate data sets, Ruth DeFries, University Professor of Ecology and Sustainable Development at Columbia University, presented her interdisciplinary research on the impact of climate change and changing cereal consumption in India in a public lecture at Columbia Global Centers | Mumbai on January 15, 2019.  Dr. DeFries' research examines how the world’s demands for food and other resources are changing land use in tropical environments.

Preparing for Storm Surge in New York and Mumbai

With a view to bringing research on urban climactic hazards into the public domain, the Center hosted a public lecture on December 12, 2017 by Adam Sobel, Professor, Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, Columbia University that served as a timely wake-up call to city agencies, citizens and other stakeholders on the need to build systemic responses and resilience to such disasters.

C40 Cities: Establishing Mumbai as a Leader of the Megacities of the World

On June 23, 2017, Columbia Global Centers | Mumbai led a day-long workshop to explore the potential for deepening Mumbai’s engagement with C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group with the aim to orient key policymakers and senior urban experts to the C40 Cities platform and collaboratively draw up a framework for future action. The workshop was led by Sanjay Sridhar, Regional Director for South and West Asia, C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group, and moderated by Ravina Aggarwal, Director, Columbia Global Centers | Mumbai.

Electric Vehicle Adoption in India

To understand the current EV ecosystem in India - its drivers and challenges, Columbia Global Centers | Mumbai organized a panel discussion on August 29th, 2022, led by Dr. Tom Moerenhout, Adjunct Assistant Professor at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA), alongside panelists, Dr. Rashi Gupta, Director at Vision Mechatronics, and Arohi Ninad Patil, Alliance for an Energy Efficient Economy.
