In mid-November, the Santiago Center contributed to the 19th Book Fair of Maipú, organized by the Municipality of Maipú, by donating copies of two literary works: No Huiré de la Lluvia by Carla Guelfenbein and the centenary edition of Gabriela Mistral’s Desolación.
No Huiré de la Lluvia (I Will Not Flee from the Rain), commissioned and published by the Center and written by renowned Chilean novelist Carla Guelfenbein, explores the complex relationship between a mother and daughter in New York City. The book was launched in March 2022 at the Maipú Municipal Theater during an event attended by Mayor Tomás Vodanovic, local authorities, members of the Maipú Writers’ Club, and local residents.
Additionally, the Center donated copies of the centenary edition of Desolación (Desolation), Gabriela Mistral’s debut anthology, originally published in 1922 by Columbia’s Instituto de las Españas (now the Department of Latin American and Iberian Cultures). This new edition, published by Columbia University Press’s Sundial House, features translations by Langston Hughes and other contributors, with illustrations by Chilean artist Rafael Lara and his students from the Islas del Sur Academy of Arts in the island of Chiloé. The edition offers a fresh perspective on Mistral’s groundbreaking work.
Through this contribution, the Santiago Center underscores its commitment to fostering culture and education in Chilean communities. This initiative not only strengthens ties with local partners but also reaffirms the Center’s dedication to promoting literature, history, and cultural exchange.
