The Columbia Global Center in Santiago recently hosted a pre-departure orientation and breakfast for Chilean students embarking on their academic journey to Columbia University this year.

Approximately 40 Chileans will pursue postgraduate degrees across various Columbia schools, including Architecture, Planning and Preservation; Arts and Sciences; Business; Climate; International and Public Affairs; Law; and Professional Studies. Additionally, three freshmen will begin their undergraduate studies at Columbia College.

Students were welcomed by Antonio Campaña, the Santiago Center’s director, who provided an overview of the Center’s mission and activities, along with valuable travel tips for navigating life as students in New York. He also highlighted the numerous resources available on Columbia’s campus to support students throughout their academic journey.

Juan Somavía (SIPA’98), president of the Columbia Alumni Association of Chile (CAA Chile), and Naisa Gormaz (TC’14), vice president, shared their experiences as Columbia alumni and offered practical advice to the incoming students. They also informed the new students about the role of CAA Chile and encouraged them to join the association, participate in its activities and stay connected to the University’s global alumni network. Additional insights were provided by Dan Poniachik (SIPA’20) and Antonia Samur (SIPA’18), who answered questions and shared their perspectives.

The event provided valuable guidance while fostering a sense of community among the new students, ensuring they feel supported as they transition to life at Columbia University.  This also highlights the Center’s key role in connecting Chilean students with Columbia’s broader network, reinforcing its commitment to global education and collaboration.
