Abstract:

Modern man evolved from a single group residing in Africa about 200,000 years ago, with non-Africans splinting off about 120,000 years ago. Since then, the African population has migrated to occupy the whole African continent, becoming genetically, culturally, and linguistically diverse with over 1500 living languages and 1.4 billion people today. With thousands of years of migration, do Africans still retain some cultural similarities? Using data from a literature review on cultural perspectives of Autism Spectrum Disorders in Africa, the talk will delve into existing cultural understanding of ASD and social cultural interventions that may positively impact the health of persons with ASD, their families and their communities.
