Abstract:

The choice of experimental design and statistical analysis are key points in planning a study but are not the only important steps. Quality control of the input data to verify that the assumptions of the statistical analysis are being met and a critical evaluation of the results from the statistical analysis are equally important stages in any study. Failure to perform these verifications correctly is a common error in many studies and is a leading cause of non-repeatable (i.e., false) reported results. In this lecture, Dr. Heath will present some of the main aspects of these steps and show some examples of what can happen when they are omitted.

About the Speaker:

Dr. Simon Heath leads the Bioinformatics Development and Statistical Genomics team and is the Manager of the Functional Genomics unit at the National Center for Genomic Analysis (CNAG).

He studied Zoology at the University of Oxford, and obtained his Ph.D. in Quantitative Genetics from the University of Edinburgh in 1995. From 1995 to 1997 he was a post-doctoral researcher in the Department of Statistics at the University of Washington, Seattle. In late 1997 he joined the Rockefeller University in New York as an Assistant Professor in the Laboratory of Statistical Genetics, later moving in 1999 to the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York as an Assistant Member. In 2001 he joined the Centre National de Génotypage (CNG) in Evry, France as a group leader in Statistical Genetics, and from 2007 to 2010 was the head of the Laboratory of Statistics and Informatics at the CNG. He is an author of more than 150 research papers, and has written publically available software for genetic analysis that is used in many centers worldwide.
