The Columbia MA Program in History and Literature offers a unique and truly interdisciplinary advanced training in the humanities. Located at historic Reid Hall in the Montparnasse neighborhood, the program immerses students in the cosmopolitan, intellectual life that characterizes Paris.
Throughout the year-long HiLi program, students work with eminent professors from Columbia (in 2021-22, Carol Gluck, Pablo Piccato, Dorothea von Mücke), l’École normale supérieure (ENS) and l’École des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS), two of France's top-tier graduate schools. In addition to studying at these institutions, they produce M.A. essays guided by some of the world’s leading scholars in their fields of interest. Students thus experience the best that American and French institutions of higher learning have to offer.
Because the program emphasizes academic rigor and a wide range of research and M.A. essay possibilities, HiLi graduates are prepared for careers in such areas as academia, journalism, and the arts.
The program offers research fellowships and archival study stipends. Financial aid opportunities are also available.
