Djerba: A Trip to Explore Southern Tunisia

The Kraft Global Fellows’ mission to explore how communities foster inclusivity found a fitting backdrop in Djerba, an island in the south of Tunisia, renowned as a sanctuary for various religious and cultural groups. Recognizing its historical significance, Tunisia pursued UNESCO World Heritage status for the island, which was officially granted in 2023. 

Djerba's charm extends beyond its picturesque landscapes to its multicultural heritage, exemplified by El Ghriba Synagogue. Dating back to the 6th century BC, this ancient site stands as Africa's oldest synagogue and a cornerstone of the island's Jewish community. El Ghriba symbolizes Djerba's enduring tradition of religious tolerance and cultural diversity. 

As the fellows ventured into Houmet El Souk, a vibrant district known for its bustling markets and narrow alleys, they engaged with locals and artisans, gaining first-hand insights into Djerba's diverse cultural heritage. To delve deeper into the island’s artisanal traditions, they also visited El Houch Concept Store, where they learned about the craftsmanship defining the island's cultural identity. This stop was an opportunity to connect with local artisans and appreciate their dedication to preserving tradition. 

The Fellows then explored Djerbahood, an international street art project initiated in 2014 by 150 artists from 30 countries. Walking through the quiet streets adorned with vibrant murals, they observed Djerba's embrace of creativity and cultural exchange. These colorful artworks, found in corners and narrow alleys, reflect a blend of tradition and contemporary expression characteristic of Djerba's cultural landscape. 

Adding a touch of adventure, the students embarked on an ATV ride, allowing them to explore Djerba's natural beauty from a different perspective; an opportunity to enjoy the island's scenic landscapes, including its unique desert-by-the-sea terrain.

As they departed, they carried with them a deeper understanding of the importance of embracing differences in today's world. Their time in Djerba left them with an enhanced appreciation for the island's historical tradition as a sanctuary for individuals of various religious backgrounds, serving as a reminder of the value of diversity and inclusivity in our global community.
