The Weatherhead Institute with the help of Columbia Global Centers | Beijing held a student engagement event –“Graduate Students and Young Scholars Meeting (GYM) Workshop and Happy Hour” from 6pm to 9pm on Apr. 6, 2016.

The event mainly included a 1-hour workshop session and 2-hour happy hour session. In the workshop, two Ph.D. students (both from Columbia) shared their current research topics and findings followed by a Q&A session. The student speakers and their presentation topics were as follows: H. Seung Cho (Ph.D. student in political science at Columbia University): “Are U.S. and China competing over East Asia’s regional institutions?”; Allison Bernard (Ph.D. student in premodern Chinese literature at Columbia University): "Poetics and Persona: On Reading Kong Shangren’s Portrait-Poetry"; and the moderator of this event is John Chen (Ph.D. student in history at Columbia University).

In the happy hour session, participants mingled and had pleasant talks.

44 participants participated in this event. Majority of the participants are Ph.D. candidates, graduate students both from China and abroad (U.S., Germany, U.K., etc.) and many are from top American peer universities such as Harvard University and Stanford University, and top local universities such as Peking University and Tsinghua University. Thanks for the support of the Weatherhead Institute and effort from student organizer, the whole event can run so smoothly.
