PGIF: Starting Simulation-Based Nursing Education Program in Rural India

In collaboration with the Columbia Nursing School, our Center supported a President's Global Innovation Fund (PGIF) project on developing a simulation-based nursing education program in rural India. The project, led by principal investigators, Professor Jennifer Dohrn and Professor Kellie Bryant, is dedicated to identifying gaps in nursing education in India and developing a simulation learning program to skill nurses.

Simulation learning helps in enhancing critical thinking, communication, problem solving and improve clinical skills through deliberate practice for students as well as nurses at clinical settings. The Indian National Council too has called for a nursing curriculum that integrates simulation learning.

With the help our Center, the researchers were able to assess the curriculum of Bel Air Hospital and three nursing colleges in Maharashtra: P.D. Hinduja College of Nursing, Government B.J. Medical College, and Sassoon Hospital Pune’s Training College of Nursing

The results of the assessment were presented at a summit organized by our Center to discuss how the curriculum can be enhanced with the addition of simulation learning. We also facilitated the building of a simulation center with Bel-Air Hospital and College of Nursing in Panchgani, Maharashtra to cater to nursing schools around the region.

In a Q and A with the Center, Professor Jennifer Dohrn talks more about the the Center's role in the PGIF project and other collaborations with the Columbia Nursing School.

New Directions in Nursing Education

Can virtual learning tools help students gain hands-on experience and bring theory to life? We organized a symposium on December 12, 2019 to address the use of technology in nursing education and probe advances in simulation-based learning to skill nurses more effectively. The symposium was attended by heads of leading nursing education institutions from the Mumbai region, along with professors and staff from Columbia University’s School of Nursing.

Capacity-Building of Nurses during COVID

How did nursing schools respond to the unexpected COVID outbreak? How did nurses deal with the psychological distress that accompanied such a crisis? We hosted a webinar led by Professor Lorraine Frazier, Dean, Columbia School of Nursing, Professor Jennifer Dohrn, Assistant Dean, Office of Global Initiatives, and Professor Kellie Bryant, Executive Director for the Center of Simulation Learning to explore  how simulation learning and other innovative methods developed by Columbia University School of Nursing prepared and trained nurses for effective and safe clinical care during the current pandemic.

Global Practicum for Students

The Global Clinical Experiences Program offered by the Columbia University School of Nursing is a unique way to learn about global health and equity. The practicum allows graduating students to spend six weeks learning under the leadership of nurses in other countries. Columbia Global Centers | Mumbai, the central partner for the practicum in India, organizes orientation sessions for students to familiarize them with the public health landscape and nursing ecosystem in India. The sessions, led by Dr. Nerges Mistry, Trustee and Director of The Foundation for Medical Research, and Jaya Kuruvilla, Principal of P. D. Hinduja National Hospital’s College of Nursing, offer an overview of the diverse public health challenges and common infectious diseases prevalent in India.
