Under Columbia’s Committee on Global Thought, scholars in the social sciences and humanities, psychologists and neuroscientist, and curators of historical museums gathered at Columbia Global Center| East Asia (Beijing) on October 15 to participate in two-day themed events on the politics of war memory in East Asia and elsewhere.

Columbia Global Centers | Beijing is hosting a certificate workshop on energy and environment offered by Earth Institute this summer in Beijing, and co-sponsoring a certificate training program in teaching Chinese and a student summer program on social science at Columbia.

On March 19, Columbia Global Centers | Beijing and Hireading Club jointly held the very first event of Columbia Global Centers | Beijing Salon Series – a book panel on The Empire of the Steppes. Dr. LIN Nan from Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), who is also a Columbia SIPA alumnus, was invited to lead the panel. The event attracted around 40 participants.
On June 13, Columbia Global Centers | Beijing invited Dr. Yishi Liu from School of Architecture, Tsinghua University to deliver a public lecture on the construction of "new Beijing" in the first decades of the P.R. China. Prof.Ying Qian, Assistant Professor of East Asian Languages and Culture at Columbia University, was the moderator.

Call for Research: Columbia Social Science Research Training Workshop for Chinese High School Students
The Columbia Social Sciences Workshop is a program jointly initiated by Columbia University’s Interdisciplinary Center for Innovative Theory and Empirics, Columbia Global Centers | Beijing, and Teenager Innovation and Challenge Projects(ICProjects). This workshop is specially designed for highly motivated Chinese high school students interested in the study of social sciences (economics, sociology, political sciences, psychology, etc.)
Earth Institute Partners with the China Center for International Economic Exchanges on Sustainability Metrics
October 1, 2014 – The Earth Institute Research Program on Sustainability Policy and Management announces a partnership with the China Center for International Economic Exchanges. The partnership centers around joint research on sustainability metrics in order to design a measurement and evaluation framework adapted to China’s unique economic development situation. The importance of this work lies in the need for a standardized methodology to organize the vastly increasing amount of information on sustainability—in a way that enhances decision-making and performance improvement.
The journey began with a boat tour in Berlin, then six days and nights on train #44 of the Trans-Siberian Railroad from Moscow to Ulaan Baatar, and three days of exploring Mongolia. Finally, on July 3, Columbia students in the Global Scholars Program arrived in Beijing, China, the final destination of a four-week summer research workshop.
