Responding to the urgency of spreading awareness about green spaces and conserving urban biodiversity, Columbia Global Centers | Mumbai launched an exciting initiative. In 2019, the Center entered into a project partnership with the Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC) in India to develop educational and outreach programs aimed at enabling Sunder Nursery, located in the heart of the country’s capital city, to grow into a world-class urban park.

As India is considered the pharmacy of the developing world, the pricing of drugs within the country is a very important national and global issue. In the last two decades, several policies have been put in place to regulate pricing and access but the comprehensive impact of these policies is yet to be explored. On November 12, 2019, Columbia Global Centers | Mumbai hosted a panel discussion on the subject featuring two winners of Yusuf Hamied Fellowships.

“Around 3.8 million people die every year around the world due to ambient air pollution,” remarked Jeanine D’Armiento, Columbia University Professor of Medicine, at the opening session of a symposium on the topic held at Columbia Global Centers | Mumbai.  The symposium was one among multiple events organized at the Center between December 2-4, 2019, to deliberate the health impact and clinical significance of air pollution in India.

Building on the mission to strengthen public health research on India, six faculty members from Columbia University and Indian institutions have been awarded the prestigious Yusuf Hamied Fellowship of 2019-2020. In its second year, the Fellowship has been awarded to projects focusing on occupational health, environmental health, non-communicable diseases, and aging in India.

Even as Climate Change poses severe risks to the city, systematic research and teaching about the subject lags behind in Mumbai’s colleges.  To address this gap, Columbia Global Centers | Mumbai launched a seminar series that leverages the scientific expertise of Columbia’s faculty for building conceptual and methodological capacity among college teachers. 

While India has made significant strides in protecting wildlife through area-based and species-specific programs in rural and remote geographies, the potential of urban India in wildlife conservation is still underestimated and needs urgent and creative action. As part of its Sunder Nursery project, Columbia Global Centers | Mumbai organized a symposium in partnership with the Aga Khan Trust For Culture (AKTC) on November 7, 2019.

Smart water management!  Segregating waste at source and boosting the circular economy!  Helping the urban workforce cope with mental health problems!  These are the app-based solutions proposed by the three winning Indian startups of the 2019-2020 round of the Urban Works Innovation Challenge.
