Columbia Students Meet Alumni - First CAA Tunisia 2026 Meeting

Columbia Global Center Tunis, together with the Columbia Alumni Association (CAA) Chapter in Tunisia, hosted a special meet-up in January in Tunis, bringing together Columbia students, alumni, and faculty members, alongside several family members. 

The event was organized in partnership with Dowit, a Tunis-based impact organization that designs immersive cultural experiences rooted in Tunisia’s living heritage—from guided visits and thematic routes to hands-on workshops that connect visitors with local know-how and craftsmanship.

Decolonizing African Agriculture

On December 4th, the Columbia Global Centers in Tunis and Nairobi, in collaboration with Columbia University Press, hosted William Moseley, DeWitt Wallace Professor of Geography at Macalester College, for a discussion on his latest book, "Decolonizing African Agriculture" (CUP, 2024). The event explored why many agricultural and food policy approaches have failed in Sub-Saharan Africa, with Moseley critiquing the dominance of Western, colonial agricultural science that has been deeply entrenched in power dynamics across the continent.

On October 14, 2024, Columbia Global Center Tunis, in collaboration with South Mediterranean University (SMU) and Columbia University Press, hosted Columbia Business School’s Professor Bruce Usher, author of the book Investing in the Era of Climate Change (CUP, 2024). The event took place at SMU’s Tunis campus, where Professor Bruce Usher shared insights from his most recent book, focusing on the intersection of climate finance and sustainability.

“In a world growing hotter day by day, the Mediterranean has emerged as a critical battleground in the fight against the climate crisis. The Mediterranean region faces an especially acute climate crisis, warming 25% faster than the world average, with summer temperatures rising 40% more rapidly. 1 In recent years, this accelerated warming has driven increasingly severe and frequent heat waves, droughts, and wildfires across the basin.

Africa and Byzantium

Dr. Andrea Achi is Assistant Curator at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art. She specializes in the art and archaeology of Late Antiquity and has a particular interest in manuscripts and archaeological objects from Christian Egypt. Trained as a Byzantinist, Dr. Achi’s scholarship focuses on late antique and Byzantine art of North and Northeast Africa, and she has brought this expertise to bear on several exhibitions at the Metropolitan Museum, New York.
