We have a variety of updates in the eighth issue of the TC-Tunisia Newsletter. To begin, a brief update on the 2021 cohort’s progress in the project is provided. Then, Dr. Han, Project Director, comments on her experience with the TC-Tunisia Project during its first year. Next, an op-ed written by Portia Williams, Associate Provost for International Affairs at Teachers College, Columbia University, is featured. After that, the spotlight is shown on Faisal Mabrouk and Khaled Houch, Project Participants, who reflect on their experience with the TC-Tunisia Project over the past year. Lastly, a recap of Coffee and Chat, the most recent community event, is provided, and the results of the Poll of the Month are revealed.

How can poetry be harnessed to create spaces of solidarity, reflection, and healing in times of climate change and the pandemic? As part of Climate Week NYC, the Center organized a conversation between poet and alumnus, Sudeep Sen, and the Center’s Director, Ravina Aggarwal.

The Center launched its second year of the highly successful Global Virtual Internship program for Columbia University students with 40 unique virtual internship opportunities from organizations in India.

Plant and animal biodiversity is under severe stress, recording a steep decline of almost two-thirds in the last 50 years, according to the Living Planet Report 2020. Here, we reflect on the Center's programs on the impact of urban and infrastructural growth on India's biodiversity and on the importance of strengthening conservation efforts by academics, civil society, and the business sector.

Screening programs can play a key role in reducing cancer. Over the last year, the Center has hosted a six-part webinar series to promote research, scientific knowledge exchange, and information about the detection and prevention of cancer in India, and raise awareness about dealing with the disease during the pandemic.
