During the last few years, Chile has been hit by record-high temperatures and an ongoing drought. This combination, which has had a strong impact in the agriculture sector, was a key determinant behind the wave of wild fires that struck the Central-South of the country last January.

On May 16, two leading scholars in the field of law, Professor Benjamin L. Liebman and Professor Rachel Stern, were invited to speak at a public lecture titled “Big Data and Future of Litigation.” Columbia Global Centers | Beijing and AmCham China co-hosted the event.

Columbia Global Centers | Mumbai partnered with the Committee on Global Thought on a project intended to discuss pressing issues affecting globalization in the world today and to do so in conversation with colleagues in different parts of the world in academia, government, business, journalism, and civil society. The Mumbai component of this Global Think-In, organized on April 24, 2017, took the form of a virtual video conversation among experts from India and the Columbia University campus.

The Global Think-In Event titled, ‘Thoughts On A Changing World’, was held on 24th April 2017. It brought together academics and experts in various fields discussing the global issues facing and affecting Kenyans.

The launch tour in Brazil also covered the cities of São Paulo on April 19 and Brasília on April 18.

Municipal solid waste has tripled globally since 1950 and is expected to be six times greater by 2030. So, how will global cities manage their ever-increasing mounds of waste? One thing that clearly emerges from years of research is that we need to put an end to open dumping. Evidence for this argument was presented by Athanasios Bourtsalas, Adjunct Professor at the Earth and Environmental Engineering Department, Columbia University, and the Manager of the Earth Engineering Center at Columbia University.

On April 16, Columbia Global Centers | Beijing successfully held the second event of Columbia Global Centers | Beijing Salon Series, themed on “New York, Columbia, and I.” Four Columbia alumni, LIN Nan (SIPA ’16), WANG Xin (SIPA '16), Kailey Xi (SIPA ’15), and LIANG Mudi (TC ’15), together with nearly 30 alumni from Columbia initiated a discussion on the history, traffic systems, architectures, and arts in the New York City.   

Greywater recycling is a potential solution for urban areas to address their acute water shortages. It decreases the demand for freshwater, lowers the discharge of wastewater into the environment, and helps recharge the groundwater table. As part of its ongoing Groundwater Series, the Center invited Rakesh Kumar, Director, CSIR-National Environmental Engineering Research Institute to share his insights on how greywater reuse can be implemented in Mumbai.
