What role does religion—and particularly Islam—play in naming, framing, and governing violence against women (VAW) and gender-based violence (GBV)?

Thinking of pluralism as a technology of power that helps to organize people and their interactions, and often articulated with special attention to religious difference, this conference addressed how pluralism becomes activated in emergency situations and is utilized in different ways and towards different ends.

On December 18, Columbia Global Centers I Beijing in collaboration with Beijing American Center presented a talk by Professor Richard Peña, Professor of Film at Columbia University's School of the Arts, Former Program Director of the Film Society at Lincoln Center, and Director Emeritus of the New York Film Festival, themed on Inventing Independent Cinema: A Celebration of Maya Deren, 1917-1961.

On December 12, 2017, Columbia Global Centers I Beijing invited Dr. Ya-Ning Amy Hsu, Adjunct Assistant Professor at Columbia University's Teachers College and Co-Chair of the Parent Leadership Council 2017-2018 at Columbia College, to share with parents of Columbia University's undergraduate students on the evolving mission of Columbia University, the academic advancement and the dynamic student life at Columbia.

When a team of researchers from Columbia University set out in January 2017 to study the risk of cyclones to the city of Mumbai, the likelihood of the city experiencing a phenomenon that had never occurred seemed remote. When their lead researcher returned in December 2017, Cyclone Ockhi had narrowly passed the city’s coastline, increasing the significance of their work. With a view to bringing research on urban climactic hazards into the public domain, the Center hosted a public lecture on December 12, 2017 by Dr. Adam Sobel.

‘Beyond the Music’, a much anticipated event at Columbia Global Centers - Nairobi, took place on December 5th 2017. The event was moderated by activist and writer – Mr. Kevin Mwachiro and the artists on the panel were Victoria Kimani, Kennedy Ombima (King Kaka), Antony Mwangi (Anto NeoSoul), Fena Gitu, Patricia Kihoro, and Judith Nyambura (Avril).

On December 5, Columbia Global Centers | Beijing successfully hosted an alumni networking event for Department of Statistics and Actuarial Sciences program.
