“Around 3.8 million people die every year around the world due to ambient air pollution,” remarked Jeanine D’Armiento, Columbia University Professor of Medicine, at the opening session of a symposium on the topic held at Columbia Global Centers | Mumbai.  The symposium was one among multiple events organized at the Center between December 2-4, 2019, to deliberate the health impact and clinical significance of air pollution in India.

Building on the mission to strengthen public health research on India, six faculty members from Columbia University and Indian institutions have been awarded the prestigious Yusuf Hamied Fellowship of 2019-2020. In its second year, the Fellowship has been awarded to projects focusing on occupational health, environmental health, non-communicable diseases, and aging in India.

Even as Climate Change poses severe risks to the city, systematic research and teaching about the subject lags behind in Mumbai’s colleges.  To address this gap, Columbia Global Centers | Mumbai launched a seminar series that leverages the scientific expertise of Columbia’s faculty for building conceptual and methodological capacity among college teachers. 

While India has made significant strides in protecting wildlife through area-based and species-specific programs in rural and remote geographies, the potential of urban India in wildlife conservation is still underestimated and needs urgent and creative action. As part of its Sunder Nursery project, Columbia Global Centers | Mumbai organized a symposium in partnership with the Aga Khan Trust For Culture (AKTC) on November 7, 2019.

Given Columbia University's expanding engagement with academic institutions in India and a deep interest among Indian students in applying to the Ivy League institution, Columbia Global Centers | Mumbai organized multi-city information sessions on the university’s various graduate programs in Fall, 2019.

More than 400 million people lack access to essential health services around the world, and nurses, the largest cadre of healthcare providers globally, are key to addressing such health disparities, emphasized Professor Jennifer Dohrn from the Columbia School of Nursing in a symposium entitled Technologies of Care: New Directions in Nursing Education organized by Columbia Global Centers | Mumbai on December 12, 2019.

In an attempt to help develop a strategic vision that would incorportae global experience into undergraduate global engagement. Dr. Shannon Marquez, the dean of undergraduate Global programs Columbia University, accompanied by Dr. Fay Ju, the Associate Dean of the center for undergraduate engagement together with Dr. Meg Booth, the Associate Director of the center for undergraduate engagement visited the global center. This served as an exploration tour in preparation for a new global program that will be carried out throughout the region.
